Today, 3rd July 2023, is Guru Purnima Day. The Full moon falling in the month of Ashada is celebrated as the Guru Purnima Day.
It is believed that it was this day that the great sage Ved Vyas who gave us the epic Mahabharata was born. It is also the day when the sage presented his classification of the Vedas, a job which was entrusted to him by Lord Shiva.
The word Vyas literally means compiler (the one who classifies) and that's how the sage got the name Ved Vyas. His original name was Krishna Dvaipayana named partly because of his (dark) complexion and partly for the the place of his birth.
Swami Vivekananda expresses the opinion that Vyasa may not have been a single person but a lineage of sages. Thus, Krishna Dvaipayana is the Vyasa of the current Manvantara. The one who preceded him was Jaratkaru and the one who will be following would be Ashwatthama, son of sage Dronacharya.
The lineage of Krishna Dvaipayana is: Lord Brahma - Vasishta - Shakti Maharishi - Parashara - Krishna Dvaipayana - Sukha - Krishnagaura & Sambhu
Vyasa had five disciples: Vaishampayana, Jaimini, Paila, Sumantu and his own son Shuka. In the above picture he can be deen with his disciples.
It is a general practice amongst Sannyasins to offer pujas to Ved Vyas and commence the Chatur Madya Vrata. Though the name suggest ii is a four month ordeal, it is usually restricted to four fortnights or two months only. This year around, with two Amavasya appearing the month of Ashada, Chatur Madya Vrata will be of Six-fortnight duration and will commence today (3rd July) and conclude on the Bhadrapada Purnima (29th September). At Sringeri, Sri Sri Mahasannidhanam would be observing his 49th Chatur Maasya Vrat.
Those who have time, resources, energy and above all inclination, an elaborate worship of Ved Vyas is recommended and for the rest, chanting at least a few times the Ved Vyas Gayatri is suggested.
