मन्दस्मित-प्रभापूर-मज्जत्कामेश-मानसा (28)
28. Mandasmita Prabhapura Majjatkamesa Manasa
Meaning
The mesmerizing smile of Devi flows like a River and the mind of Lord Shiva is deeply attracted by it.
Interpretation
Smita means smile and manda-smita means a special type of mesmerizing smile. Here, Kamesa stands for Lord Shiva. When Devi is seen seated on the lap of Lord Shiva, the couple is referred to as Kamesvara. This form is different from their togetherness in Ardhanarishvara form. Here the identity of Devi is separately maintained. Lord Shiva is believed to be deeply immersed in that beautiful special smile of Lalithambika. When the mind of Lord Shiva itself is deeply influenced by the smile of Devi, it only speaks about Her glory.
One of the Shankaracharyas of Kanchi Mutt was Muka Sankarendra Saraswati (398-437 CE) who was speech impaired. He is credited with the composition Mooka Pancha Sathi a 500 stanza hymn divided into five sections of 100 slokas each. Part 3 of the book is named Mandhasmita Sathakam.
Adi Shankara, when talking of Devi's smile, says that the Devi's smile emits sweet nectar like light. The beaks of Chakora birds have turned numb because of constantly drinking the light emitted by Devi's smile and therefore, for a change, they want to drink the Moon-beam which is sour in taste.
