LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM
@ S. Subramaniam
मन्त्रिण्यम्बा विरचित विशङ्ग वध तोषिता (75)
विशुक्र प्राणहरण वाराही वीर्य नन्दिता (76)
Mantrinyamba Virachita Vishanga Vadha Toshita (75)
Vishukra Pranaharana Varahi Veerya Nandita (76)
Meaning:
Devi Lalithambika is extremely pleased at Mantrinyamba killing Vishanga and Varahi killing Vishukra. Vishukra and Vishanga were both younger brothers of Bhandasura.
Lalitha Sahasranamam vs Lalithopakhyanam
There are two different versions as to which Devi killed which demon. As per LSN, as mentioned in the above two slokas, it was Mantrini who killed Vishanga and Varahi was responsible for the death of his brother Vishukra.
Lalithopakhyanam, which gives a detailed account of the battle with Bhandasura, mentions that it was Dandanatha (Varahi) who killed Vishanga and Shyamala (Mantrini) who killed Vishukra. The text also provides details about the weapons used for killing - plough (halayudha) by Varahi and arrow by Mantrini.
Views of various scholars:
1.Brahma Shri Shanmukha
Sharma Garu:
According to the Pravachanam of Brahma Shri Samavedam Shanmukha Sharma Garu, the Namah-s in the Lalitha Sahasranamam are by mistake and one should go by what is stated in Lalithopakhyanam.
2. Quote from Sri Vidya Rahasya
In Srividya Rahasya, Vishanga is the Chitta Vritti (thought waves) that is sublated by Guru upadesa and Mantra Gnana. Guru DIksha and Mantra Anushtana Siddhi are controlled by Mantrini. Hence, she is extolled as Gnana Shakti.
Whereas, Vishukra is the Chitta Vritti that projects the Upasaka as Paricchinna jiva. Varahi / Dandini annihilate this vritti in the Upasaka. She is extolled as Kriya shakti.
So, as per Sri Vidya Rahasya, Mantrini killed Vishaga and Varahi killed Vishukra.
3.Views of HH Sri Sri Sacchidananda Shivabhinava Narasimha Bharathi
The above question was put before His Holiness Jagatguru of Sringeri Mutt Sri Sri Sacchidananda Shiva-Abhinava Narasimha Bharathi Swamigal (1858-1912), the 33rd Pontiff of SringerI Mutt, and his reply was: 'Does it really matter?'
HH, however, constituted a discussion panel on the subject and several scholars from Gauda, Gurjara etc., participated in it and after nine days of discussion, it was concluded that the pramana of Lalitha Sahasra Namam, which also matches with what is described in Dakshinamurti Samhita and the tradition of SringerI Mutt, is acceptable.
HH also favoured LSN because of its origin from Vashinyadi Vag Devatas, who represent the speech of Lalitha Parameswari herself.
Author's view:
The very idea of this daily dossier is to spread spiritualism and share minute details about Lalithambika amidst readers. Not to indulge in unnecessary controversial issues. Today's write-up is also aimed at presenting some basic facts as they appear not to create any controversy.
Let's reserve all our energies to chant LSN and practice mediating constantly upon Devi's name. As far as these two Namah-s are concerned, let's go by Sringeri Jagatguru's reply to the question
Does it really matter? 2 namahs out of 1000 does not make any difference.
