LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM Namah # 99

LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM

@ S. Subramaniam

मूलाधारैक निलया (99)

Muladharaika Nilaya (99)

Meaning:

Devi resides in Muldhara Chakra.

Interpretation:

Mula means root and Adhara means support. That is why Muladhara Chakra, which is the first of the seven chakras, is called the base, the very fundamental Chakra. Muladhara Chakra is located at the base of the spinal cord.

From this namah onwards we will be seeing Devi moving from one Chakra to the other - from Muladhara to Sahasrara - to join with her consort Lord Shiva at the top.

Muladhara is represented by a four petal Lotus with a yellow square at the center representing Earth. The four petals stands for joy, pleasure, controlling passion and Blissfulness.

Shri Ganesha is the deity for Muladhara Chakra. Adhara, as we have seen, means support and Shri Ganesha provides the necessary support for His Mother Devi Lalitha who resides in this Chakra. Worship of Lord Ganesha is important for spiritual ascendency from Muladhara to the other Chakras placed above it.

Quote from Soundarya Lahari

तवाधारे मूले सह समयया लास्यपरया

नवात्मानं मन्ये नवरसमहाताण्डवनटम् ।

Tavadhare Mooley Saha Samayaya Lasyaparaya

Navatmanam Manye Navarasa Mahatandava Natam ।

Adi Shankara says : I meditate on the Muladhara in which Lord Shiva is engaged in the Maha Tandava along with Devi who performs the Lasya dance along with him.

In this sloka, Shankara addresses Lord Shiva as Nava Atman who controls all the nine expressions (Navarasas), and Devi as Samaya.

Author's Notes:

It is generally explained that Devi resides in Mooladhara the base chakra and Lord Shiva at the top, the seventh chakra called Sahasrara.

Devi ascends from Mooladhara, one by one, each of the five intervening Chakras and finally reaches Sahasrara, the abode of Lord Shiva, her consort, for their ultimate (intimate) union.

However, it has been clearly mentioned by Shakara that Devi and Shiva both perform the Tandava / Lasya dance in Muladhara. That indicates that the two are always together  and inseparable.

Therefore, in the view of this writer, Nilaya should be construed that: Muladhara is the permanent abode of Devi. It is only the Shakti  (the energy) part of her that keeps moving, ascending and descending, during Meditation by the devotees. Devi and Shiva are always together and present not only in all the seven Kundalini chakras but in all parts of the entire universe.
