LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM - Namah # 95

LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM

@ S. Subramaniam.

कुलयोगिनी (95)

Kulayogini (95)

Meaning:

Kula, as far as this Namah is concerned, refers to mental worship (manasika puja), particularly the worship of Kundalini Chakras. Mental worship can be performed only through yoga. That is why Devi is called Kulayogini.

Interpretation:

While the LSN refers to Devi as Kulayogini, the Vishnu Bhagavata Purana reverently addresses the Divine Mother as Maha Yogini (Great Ascetic).

As we have seen above, the first part of the namah Kula  refers to mental worship. The second part Yogini should be rightly interpreted as mean the 64 Yoginins. This namah basically relates to Tantrik way of worship of Devi.

Yogins are 64 in numbers and are very powerful Demi-Goddesses possessing specific unique powers.

These 64 Yoginins, when worshiped in the prescribed methodology, are believed to fulfill all desires, drive away negativity and prevent misfortunes. Yoginis will give the devotees knowledge, peace and all-around prosperity.

Worship of Devi Maa Kali during Diwali, called Sree Sree Shyama Puja, is very popular in Bengal in particular and the Eastern Region in general. During the worship of Kali, idols of Dakini and Sakini, two of the Yoginins are also installed and worshiped.

Author's Notes:

The worship of Yoginins is a tradition strictly practiced by Tantric devotees. Sadhvik devotees may adopt to the milder form by just uttering the mantras pertaining to the 64 Yoginins.

An unique temple for the 64 Yoginis, the famous Mahamaya temple, (also called Chausath Yogini Temple) perhaps the one and only one of it's kind, is located  in Hirapur about 20 kms outside Bhubaneswar in  Odisha. It is devoted exclusively to the worship of the yoginis, auspicious demi-goddess and the idols are positioned in a circular form.
