LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM - Namah # 84

LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM

         @ S. Subramaniam

हरनेत्राग्नि सन्दग्ध कामसंजीवनौषधीः (84)

Hara Netragni Sandagdha Kama Sanjivana Aushadhi (84)

Meaning:

Manmatha, the god of love was burnt by the third eye of Lord Shiva.  Devi Lalithambika resurrected Manmatha.  Sanjivana is an herbal medicine that is believed to cause resurrection.  Therefore Devi is praised as Sanjivana for Manmatha.

Interpretation:

In Hindu mythological stories, usually we read about Gods making incarnations or worldly appearances to kill a demon and after killing him grants him salvation or Liberation or Mukti.

The case of Bhandasura concludes with an altogether different end. Here Devi not only grants Mukti to Bhandasura but also resurrects Kama Deva or Manmatha.

Manmatha, before his killing, was an embodiment of Avidya that mainly comprises ego or ignorance. In contrast, the resurrected Manmatha was the embodiment of pure and profound knowledge.  His ego was completely burnt to ashes by Lord Shiva and in its place, knowledge was awarded to him by Shakti.

The Battle with Bhandasura

Bhandasura was created from the ashes of Kama Deva. Devi Lalithambika came out of the Chidagni kunda to destroy Bhandasura.

Having vanquished him, Devi Lalitha Tripura Sundari restores Kama Deva back to life one again. However he is brought back to life in Ananga form i.e. without any body, without any form.

With this Namah, the verses about war with Bhandāsura ends.

Author's Notes:

There are varied versions as to who exactly resurrected Manmatha - Devi Lalithambika or Lord Shiva.

According to all the three references relating to Devi Lalitha, the Lalitha Sahasra Namam, the Lalitha Trishati and the Lalithopakhyanam, it was Devi.

Referring to Namah # 12 and 13 in Trishati, we find mention about this.

12. Kandharpa vidhya

She who is the holy knowledge worshipped by the God of love.

13. Kandharpa janakapanga veekshana

She who created God of love by her sight

According to the version of Kalika Purana, it was Lord Shiva who resurrected Kamadeva. Here it is mentioned that Rati, wife of Manmatha, who was unable to bear the loss of Kamadeva, did severe penance to please Lord Shiva to restore Kamadeva and hot her wish fulfilled.

शम्भुनेत्राग्निनिर्दग्धः कामः शम्भोरनुग्रहात्। तत्र रूपं यतः प्राप कामरूपं ततोऽभवत् ||

Shambhu Netra Agnir Dagda Kamaha Shambor Anugrahath.  Tatea Roopam Yatah Praapa Kama Roopam Tatho Bhavath ||

Let's go by the version of LSN which has been authored by Vak Devis.

Foot-note:

According to popular belief, the place where Kama Deva was resurrected was Kamrupa or the present day Assam state in India.
