LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM - Namah # 83

LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM

         @ S. Subramaniam

ब्रहम उपेन्द्र महेन्द्रादि देवसंस्तु वैभवा (83)

Brahma Upendra Mahendradi Devasamstuta Vaibhava (83)

Meaning:

Gods such as Brahma, Upendra (Vishnu) and Mahendra (Shiva) along with demi-gods like Indra and others praised Devi for her victory over Bhandasura.

Interpretation:

Lord Vishnu is addressed here as Upendra which should be read as Upa-Indra or the younger brother of Indra. Strangely both Indira and Vishnu, in his Vamana Avatar, were born sons of sage Kashyapa-Aditi couple and that's how Lord Vishnu became the younger brother of Indra. In VSN, there is sloka in which Lord is addressed as Upendra

Upendro Vaamanah Praamshuh Amoghas Shuchiroorjitah

The very purpose of Lalithambika coming out of the Chidagni Kunda was to vanquish Bhandasura and the objective is successfully accomplished, all the gods praise her.

The Battle with Bhandasura

With the termination of Bhandasura, Devas celebrated with resonant sounds of Celestial Drums and showers of flowers from Swarga.

Brahma, Vishnu, Rudras, Indra and other Devas, Adityaas, Vasus, Maruds, Sadhya Devatas, Siddhas, Kimpurushas, Yakshas, Nishaacharas and Daityas felt so gladdened in their hearts and Mahadevi Lalithambika sat on a Golden Throne looking relaxed  and satisfied.

There was a fresh wave of hope, virtue, courage, confidence and happiness began again to all the Beings with relief and fulfillment. Brahma and others made a spontaneous Commendation at the Victory of  Lalithambika.

Author's Notes:

There is always endless happiness in a victory. More so when the victory over evil forces is scored by the virtuous one. The Namah indirectly expresses such a kind of happiness and giver of such a happiness is none other than Devi Lalithambika.

To elucidate the point more deeply let me quote the following Sanskrit verse:

Akrodhen jayet krodham,

Saadhum saadhuna jayet |

Jayet kadaryam daanen,

Jayet satyen chaanritam ||

Anger can be overcome by remaining cool, wickedness by kindness. Miserly behavior can be overcome by giving charity, and falsehood by adhering to the truth.
