LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM - Namah # 63

LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM

         @ S. Subramaniam

कामदायिनी (63)

Kamadayini (63)

Meaning:

Here the word Kama stands for Desires and Dayini for giver.

Devi fulfills all the desires of her devotees.

Interpretation:

Interestingly this Namah convey three different means based on the context in which it is spoken about.

1.Kama is Desire and Dayini is fulfiller. Now the question is fulfiller of whose desires? We get answer for this in the Brahmanda Purana. It says : Devi is a witness to creativity  and fulfills the desires of Lord Brahma and therefore she is Kamadayini.

2. Devi also fulfills the desires of her bhaktas (devotees) and take them closer to Kamesha or Lord Shiva. The word Shiva means auspicious  (we have seen it already) and therefore Dayini - the bestower / giver should be understood as the giver of auspicious boons.

3. Here the word itself is split differently as Kamada + Ayani and the meaning of it should be understood as Devi has Lord Shiva as an inseparable treasure of inheritance. Thus it speaks of the wonderful union of Shiva and Shakti.

Adi Shankara in his composition Kamakshi Stotram also addresses Devi Kamakshi as the one who showers boons on her devotees and fulfills all their desires.. Very interesting to note that Shankara uses the word anu dinam also when he praises Devi Kamakshi.

अनुदिनं भिक्षा प्रदान क्षमाम् ।

 Anudinam Bhiksha Pradana Kshamam |

It should be understood as Devi showers her mercy on and on, non-stop, each day. Not only does she fulfill the desires by showering mercy, she also condones (forgives) all the sins of the devotees. 'Forgiving sins in itself is a very big boon' says Maha Periyava. So it is a double bonanza for the devotees.

Author's Note:

There is a saying in English - It's only the crying baby that gets fed. Though Devi never differentiates between anyone and treat all the people as her own children and showers her mercy on every one equally and abundantly, we - the devotees, must humbly ask for it / seek it from her by praying / worshipping her lotus feet.
