LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM
@ S. Subramaniam
अनवद्याङ्गी (50)
Anavadyangi (50)
Meaning:
Every part of Devi's body is flawless and is in accordance with Samudrika Lakshanam.
Interpretation:
Samudrika-Lakshanam is a book authored by the king of seas and hence it got the name Samudrika. It defines beauty by setting a standard for perfection for various body parts.
The Lalitha Trishati contains a similar description of Devi . Namah # 273 says Devi is :
लब्धाधिशय सर्वाङ्ग सौन्दर्या
Labdhadhishaya Sarvanga Saundarya
Sarvangam (every limb in her body) is extremely beautiful.
Adi Shankara while presenting his views on Devi's beauty, uses the word anagham which means spotless or sinless.
तवात्मानं मन्ये भगवति नवात्मान अनघम्
Tavatmanam Manye Bhagavati Navatmana Anagham ।
The Jagatguru says: Hey Bhagavati I see / visualize from my mind (Manye) that your beauty (Tavatmanam) is pure and spotless (Anagham).
The word Navatmana in the verse actually attributes to Lord Shiva. It is the Nine Vyuhams such as Chitta, Kala, Gnana etc. that surround Lord Shiva explains Maha Periyava in Deivathin Kural. But then it should be noted this sloka (34 of Soundarya Lahari) Adi Shankara begins with शरीरं त्वं शम्भोः (Shareeram Tvam Shambo which means this body (with all its spotless beauty etc.) of Devi is given to her by Lord Shiva.
