LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM - Namah # 48

LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM

         @ S. Subramaniam

महा लावन्य शेवधिः (48)

Maha Lavanya Shevadhi (48)

Meaning:

Devi is the treasure house of beauty.

Interpretation:

Here Maha means great, Lavanya  means charm / beauty (one of the many meanings) and Shevati means treasure house - Khazana (கஜானா)

Scholors explain, Lavanya, in this context, should be understood as the immaculate, blemishless light continuously being emitted from the body of Devi that makes her look extremely attractive, charming and beautiful.

Interestingly the Namah is in Masculine form. Therefore while chanting the Sahasranamam it should be recited as Maha Lavanya Sevadhi but while performing puja (archana) it should be said as Maha Lavanya Sevidhayai Namah:

Adi Shankara  says  - Even the best of the poets and thinkers, such as Brahma, are in great pain to find a suitable comparison to describe Devi's beauty.

How much beautiful is beautiful?

He further adds, the celestial damsels such as Ramba, Urvasi, Menaka, Tilottama and Ghritachi etc., looking at Devi's beauty, wanted to emulate her and desire for getting similar beauty.  So they did severe penance but gave it up midway, fully realizing that the extremely beautiful features that Devi possess, can be obtained only by attaining Sayujya Padavi (oneness) with Girisa (Lord Shiva) and that is exclusively meant for Devi. For others it is inaccessible.
