गूढ गुल्फा (42)
Gudha Gulpha (42)
Meaning:
Devi has a pair of round and well shaped ankles that are hidden.
Interpretation:
Gudha means hidden and Gulpha refers to ankles. In simple terms the namam conveys the meaning that the Divine Mother has strong and beautiful ankles that remain hidden.
Gudhagulpha (गूढगुल्फ) refers to the “hidden ankles” and represents the ninth of the “eighty secondary characteristics” (anuvyanjana) as defined in the Dharma-samgraha.
Among the Names describing the Devi , three Namahs correspond to Thri-Marma regions. (1) Kadamba Manjari Klipta deals with the Ears of Devi (2) Arunaruna Kausumbha deal with the hip / waist region and (3) this one, Gudha Gulpha deal with her Ankles.
The junction point where flesh, bones, ligaments and veins get concentrated in human body is called the Marma region and it is believed that it contains the Prana which ultimately leads to Chaitanya or Consciousness.
मर्माणि मांस सिरा स्नायु अस्थि संधि सन्निपाता:।
तेषु स्वभावत एव विशेषण प्राणा स्तिष्ठन्ति to quote from the Shushruta Samhita.
Meditating upon Devi's Gulpha - Ankle region will pave way for one to have the darshan of Devi's Akhanda Chaitanya Rupuni form.
Adi Shankara has not specifically said anything about Devi's ankles and he describes Devi's entire feet in general. The will be shared in the subsequent Slokas / Namahs.
