LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM

         @ S. Subramaniam

इन्द्रगोप परिक्षिप्त स्मरतूणाभ जङ्घिका (41)

Indragopa Parikshipta Smaratunabha Janghika (41)

Meaning:

Devi's shank or calf muscles (the portion between knee and ankle) look like the quiver of Manmatha, the god of love. In terms of complexion, they glow brilliantly, brighter than Indragopa,an insect that is Red-velvet in colour.

Interpretation:

Indragopa is a kind of garden insect which looks glowing red in colour. it is called Red velvet Bug in English ,தம்பலப் பூச்சி  in Tamil and Arudra Purugu (ఆరుద్ర పురుగు) in Telugu.

Parikshipta means surrounded by and Smara is another name of Manmatha. Thunabha means the Quiver (where arrows are stored) and Jangikha refers to shank (Calf muscle).

It may be noted that the calf muscles help spread energy throughout the body and activate the three Indriyas (Kayaka, Vachika and Manasika) to perform actions. Meditating upon Devi's Jangikha bestows complete control over the Indriyas.

Adi Shankara too compares Devi's calf muscles to Manmatha's quiver. In addition he provides a reason for it also. Says the Jagatguru, Manmatha converted Devi's calf muscles into his quiver in order to conquer Lord Shiva. He did so because he was so confident that if one has the blessings of Devi then he can conquer anything in this world.

पराजेतुं रुद्रं द्विगुणशरगर्भौ गिरिसुते

निषङ्गौ जङ्घे ते विषमविशिखो बाढ-मकृत ।

Paraajeythum Rudram Dwiguna sharagarbhau Girisuthey

Nishangau Jangey They Vishama vishikho Baadha makrutha

O Daughter of the Mountain. Manmatha has, in order to conquer Rudra, converted Thy two shanks (calf muscles) as quivers to store therein his arrows.
