LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM
@ S. Subramaniam
रत्न किङ्किणिका रम्य रशना दाम भूषिता (38)
Ratna Kinkinika Ramya Rashanaa Dama Bhushita (38)
Meaning:
Devi is adorned with a beautiful girdle (a belt like ornament worn around the waist) - (called Oddiyanam in Tamil) studded with mini bells and gems.
Interpretation:
Here, Ramya means beautiful, Kinkinika refers to the sound made by bells and Ratna, of course, is the gems. Rashana means an ornament worn around the waist. Another word for Rashana or Oddiyanam is Kanchi.
Maha Periyava in Deivathin Kural mentions how the City of Kanchipuram got its name from the Oddiyanam (called Kanchi in Sanskrit) worn by goddess Kamakshi.
Adi Shankara makes a specific reference to the word Kanchi in the Kamakshi Sthothram composed by him
काञ्ची नूपुर हार दाम सुभगां काञ्ची पुरी नायिकां
Kamakshi Devi who rules the City of Kanchi Puri, is adorned with beautiful girdles (waist belt ornament) anklets, garlands and wreaths that bring good fortune to all her devotees.
Additional Information:
With this we come to the conclusion of Madhya Kuta.
The 35 Namahs starting from 13 (Champa-ashoka-punnaga) to 47 (Marali Manda Gamana) are divided into three Kutas, the Vaaghbhava Kuta (13-29) describing Devi's face;
Madhya Kuta (30-38) describing the portion from Devi's neck to waist and Shakti Kuta (39-47) describing the portion from Devi's waist to her feet.
