LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM
@ S. Subramaniam
स्तनभार दलन्मध्य पट्टबन्ध वलित्रया
Stanabhara Dalanmadhya Pattabandha Vatalitraya (36)
Meaning
Three lines (can also be inferred as Folds - மடிப்பு) are appearing in the stomach region of Devi under the golden belt worn by her and these are due to the heaviness of Her bosoms,
Interpretation:
Stana again refers to the breast and bhara means heaviness. Vali-traya means three lines. Devi's waist region is adorned with three creeper like lines.
The three folds or lines appearing in the middle region (dalan madhya) of Devi actually represent the three roles played by Devi, namely, Creation, Sustenance and Destruction. Devi is compassion personified. She constantly showers compassion on all the living creatures of the entire universe and this makes it a burden (heaviness) on Her. This heaviness (bharam) is supported by the three lines (vali-traya).
Adi Shankara further adds the role of Manmatha (Kamadeva) in his description and says that the three lines look like the Lavali (Gooseberry) creeper.
Thridhaa Naddham Devi Thri Vali Lavalee Vallibhiriva!
O Mother Divine! The three folds in Thy middle region look like three strands of ‘lavali’ creeper wound by Kama Deva, the God of love, as a support to prevent Thy middle region from breaking.
