LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM
@ S. Subramaniam
रत्न ग्रैवेय चिन्ताक लोल मुक्ता पलान्विता (32)
Ratna Graiveya Chintaka Lola Mukta Palanvita (32)
Meaning:
Devi's neck is adorned with a golden pendant which is studded with ruby stones and a pearl necklace.
Interpretation:
This Namah is very interesting. It classifies devotees of Devi into three categories.
(1) the word Lola, according to this interpretation, means those with a fickle mind. The Amarakosa says, Lola means fickle and greedy. Devotees who worship with a specific motive, with a view to achieve some specific goal, belong to this category - they belong to
the lowest order. They are simply wealth seekers.
(2) Those devotees who are not able to fix the deity in their heart but worship her externally belong to the middle class worshipers. They are drawn by the ornaments worn by Devi and their mind tend to concentrate on them instead of the Devi. Graiveya Chintaka literally means those who concentrate on the neck (greevam) of the goddess.
(3) The Muktas are the highest class of worshippers. They are full of wisdom (some unique quality bestowed upon a select few by Devi Herself) and they are able to apply their mind, mediate upon Devi and seek nothing but liberation.
Lolas or Muktas get the benefits (phalan) of their respective prayers according to their category. This is the meaning of lola-mukta-phalanvita.
Adi Shankara's commentary on applying the mind, concentrating, meditating, seeking liberation etc. are too vast and too elaborate to be comprehended within this short space.
