LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM Namah # 31

LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM

         @ S. Subramaniam

कनकाङ्गद-केयूर-कमनीय-भुजन्विता  (31)

Kanakangada Keyura Kamaniya Bhujanvita (31)

Meaning:

Devi whose beautiful shoulders are covered with ornaments such as angada and keyura made of pure gold. Due to the difference in their shapes, the angada and keyura are mentioned as different ornaments.

Even though the ornaments differ in form, the ingredient in both the cases is one and the same - gold. Similarly the forms, nature and characteristics of human beings, (read:) devotees of Devi might vary widely, but the innermost part in them, the common thread, is the same - the Brahman.

Interpretation:

Angada (अङ्गद) refers to an “arm-band” ornament (Aabharana) for the upper-arm usually worn by females. It is also called Hastabhushana. Keyura (केयूर) is a kind of ornament worn around the upper arm or above the elbow.

In Shiva Purana, Brahma narrates to Narada: When the Shiva Ganas (attendants) went away leaving the Lord alone with wife Sati, the Lord in a romantic and playful mood would sometimes take the necklace off her breasts and press it with his hands. Sometimes he would remove the bracelets (angada), armpit ornament (keyura), bangles, rings etc. from their respective places and fix them again one by one.

Adi Shankara, in his composition Meenakshi Panchakam also makes a mention about the ornaments worn by Devi, one of which is the Angada or the bracelet.

The Arms are adorned with Golden Bracelets studded with various Gems.

For Carnatic Music lovers, it may be interesting to note that in one of his kirtis dedicated to Mayavaram Kshetram, Muthuswami Dikshadar has composed a kirti तारकेश्वर दया निधे मां तारयाशु  (தாரகேஸ்வர தயா நிதே மாம் தாரயாஸு) in Raga Shankarabharanam, in which he mentions about कार्य कारण विश्वाधार कनकाङ्गद केयूर हार. (கார்ய காரண விஸ்வாதார கனகாங்கத கேயூர ஹார).
