LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM
@ S. Subramaniam
कामेश बद्ध माङ्गल्य सूत्र शोभित कन्धरा (30)
Kamesha Baddha Mangalya Sutra Shobhita Kandhara (30)
Meaning:
Devi's neck is adorned with the Mangalya Sutra which is tied by Lord Shiva. Also, in the form of Mangala Sutra, Devi actually wears Lord Shiva in her heart.
Interpretation:
Interestingly, the concept of Mangala Sutra is not mentioned anywhere in the Vedas. The Manusmriti does make a mention about bridal jewellery as Stridhan but no, not the Mangal sutra. The Grihya Sutras (Hindu texts prescribing ceremonies for each stage of an individual’s life) make no mention of the practice of tying a mangalsutra for the sake of solemnising a marriage.
However, Sri Vedanta Desika (1268-1369 CE) in his work Paduka Sahasram clearly mentions about Mangala Sutra in the Sloka beginning with Vahaniti Rangeswara Paadarakshe.
The comparative analysis of Lalitha Sahasranamam with other popular slokas reveal clearly that the words contained in Lalitha Sahasranamam clearly relate to a very later period, when the practice of Mangalsutra dharanam had come into practice.
Adi Shankara, in his praise about the Mangala Sutra worn by Devi mentions about the three lines on Her neck (Gale Rekha Thisro). Says the Jagatguru:
The three lines on Thy neck indicating the number of strings in the auspicious Mangala Sutra fastened by Lord Shiva at Thy wedding, shine like boundaries demarcating the three musical scales consisting of Shadjaa, Madhyama and Gandhara, which form the source of the various melodies of musical notes.
