LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM Namah # 186

LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM

निस्तुला नीलचिकुरा निरपाया निरत्यया ।

दुर्लभा दुर्गमा दुर्गा दुःखहन्त्री सुखप्रदा ॥ ५०॥

[50 Nistula Neelachikura Nirapaya Niratyaya // Durlabha Durgama Durga Dukha-hantri Sukhaprada

निरपाया (186)

Nirapaya (186)

Meaning:

Devi is without destruction, the prime quality of the Brahman.

Interpretation:

In this namah, Nir stands for negativity and Apaya means something that is indescribable, imperishable.

When expanded the namah becomes Nirgatah Apayah Yasyah Sa or

Devi is without destructions, or Devi never departs.

Apaya can also be understood to mean death or annihilation. Apaya Chinta is the term used by Kalidasa in Raghuvamsam to define fear of death.

However, from the following two quotes, it is very clear that, Nirapaya in this context in LSN is to mean Imperishable only.

 Author's Notes

The Namah Nirapaya  is a very complex one. Considering that the Sanskrit word Apaya has several different meanings.  A few of they are discussed below:

Apaya (अपाय) refers to difficulties and these difficulties are classified into four forms Ajna, Apaya, Vipaka, and Samsthana. These difficulties can be overcome (Nirapaya) by meditation says Hema Chandra in his book Tri-shashti Salaka Purusha Charitra (Lives of Sixty-three Illustrious persons). No these are different and has got nothing to do with the 63 Nayanmars.

Apaya (अपया) also means to depart to disappear; In Uttara Rama Charita there is a mention

शोको दिनेषु गच्छत्सु वर्धतामपयाति किम्

(Shoko dineshu gacchatsu vardhatam apayyti kim). Why feel sad when the sun sets - it will reappear again.

Conclusion: as mentioned, the correct meaning to be assigned to the term Nirapaya in regard to Devi is She is imperishable.
