LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM
[ 49. Nirnasha Mrutyumadhani Nishkriya Nishparigraha ]
निर्नाशा (180)
Nirnasha (180)
Meaning
Devi is indestructible. She is deathless.
Interpretation
In this namah Nir means Nil and Nasha means end of life / death. But Devi is eternal. Hence she has no end at all.
When expanded the term becomes Nirgatah Nasah Yasyah sa which means She who is without any end. Brahman is beyond destruction. Infinity, thy name is Brahman!
Taittiriya Upanishad, Section II Brahmananda Valli Verse 1 says,
॥ सत्यम् ज्नञम् अनन्तम् ब्रह्म ॥ Satyaṁ Jnanam Anantam Brahma, which means that Brahman is the eternal truth, the complete knowledge and infinite. All the three qualities - Truth, knowledge and eternality - attribute to Devi for she is the manifestation of Brahman.
In the Slokam Sai Ashtakam composed by this author one can find the reference त्वमेव आध्यमश्च अन-अनन्तम् त्वमेवा - You are the beginning and you have no ends.
Author's Note
Quote from Raghuvamsam by Kalidasa
As we have seen above, Nasa means the end or more specifically the death. Kalidasa in his composition Raghuvamsam provides a beautiful explanation to Nasa - the death by looking at it from two points of view.
Says the learned scholar, the foolish man regards the loss of his dear one (Priya-nasa) as an arrow shot into his heart (I.e an extremely painful experience), whereas the wise man looks on the same as an arrow that has been pulled out (total relief from the pains of life).
Quote from Manusmriti
Manusmriti also contains a mention about the term Nasa but in this context it is referred to something perishable rather than death.
एक एव सुहृद् धर्मो निधानेऽप्यनुयाति यः ।
शरीरेण समं नाशं सर्वमन्यद् हि गच्छति ॥ १७ ॥
Morality (Justice) is the only friend who follows one even after death; everything else perishes along with the body.
We human beings are immortal. We cannot escape death. By constantly worshiping Devi, who is Nirnasha, it can be ensured that the end will be peaceful.
