LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM - Namah # 174

LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM

@ S. Subramaniam

[  48. Nih:samshaya Samshayaghni Nirbhava Bhavanashini ]

निर्भवा (174)

Nirbhava (174)

Meaning:

Devi is without any origin.  She is Aadhi (first) and Anadhi (without parentage, having no beginning).

Interpretation:

Nir means nil / nothing / no position and Bhava means Structure, therefore Nirbhava means there is no structure; when there is no structure then there is no origin.

When expanded we get the phrase Nirgatah bhavah (=utpatti) yasyah sa which literally  means Devi is without origin.

It is generally said that Lord Shiva is the only one who is without any origin, as nobody created Him.  Here, Lalitambika, even though She was created from Chidagni kunta by Lord Shiva, she is said to be without origin because there is no difference between Her and Lord Shiva.  Their unified form is called the Brahman.

Author's Note:

Bhava is one of the many names of Lord Shiva.

सद्योजातं प्रपद्यामि सद्योजाताय वै नमो नमः। भवे भवे नाति भवे भवस्व मां भवोद्भवाय नमः॥

In the current context, it should be understood that Lord Shiva represents the bodily structure (Bhava)  and Devi the energy (Shakti)  inside it. Devi,  on her own, does not have any separate structure and therefore referred to as Nirbhava It is only when the structure and energy are together action can happen.
