Samshayaghni (173)
Meaning:
Devi clears doubts of Her devotees. She is capable of clarifying the doubts of wise men, as She is the embodiment of knowledge.
Interpretation:
Samshayam means doubt / unclear situation / uncertainty and Aghni (feminine character of Aghna) means knowledge giver / knowledge enlightenment / clear vision status.
When expanded ee get the Sanskrit phrase Samsayam hanti iti tatha
Devi is the remover (literally hani means destroyer) of all kinds of doubts.
The one who is called a Guru should be thoroughly well read and without any doubt about the subject matter. He should be able to clarify the doubts of his disciples instantaneously. In this sense, this namah indicates that there is no difference between Devi and a Guru.
Lord Shiva (who is also referred to as Dakshinamoorthy or the Guru) has imparted the knowledge about the role of a Guru to his consort Parvathi through 274 verses and this teaching is called ‘Guru Gita’ which forms part of Skanda Puranam.
Author's Notes
Arjuna had lot of doubts. Krishna patiently answered every one of his questions and cleared all his doubts. Faith is Life, Doubt is Death, says Sri Ramakrishna. Swamji explains, in his usual style, by narrating a short story
A man wanted to cross a river. A sage gave him an amulet and said, “This will carry you across”. Midway after crossing the river, driven by curiosity, he opened the amulet to see what was in it and found the sacred name of Rama written. the Lord. At this the man said deprecatingly, “Is this the whole secret?”. No sooner this skepticism entered his mind than he sank down. It is faith in the ‘name’ of the Lord that works wonders; for faith is life and want of faith is death.
Sandeha Nivarini (Dissolving doubts), is a compilation of dialogues between Sri Sathya Sai Baba and his devotees. There are about 50 maxims and one such dialogue is quoted below:
Devotee: When there is no peace of mind, where can rest be got?
Swami: Well my boy, rest is for the sake of peace of mind. Once you have that peace, where is the need for rest?
