LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM - Namah # 170

LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM

@ S. Subramaniam

[ 48 Nishkrodha Krodhashamani Nirlobha Lobhanashini ]

निर्लोभा (170

Nirlobha (170)

Meaning:

Devi is without greed.  She is extremely liberal with Her devotees

Interpretation:

Lobha means greed and Nir adds negativity to it. Nirlobha means Devi is without greed.  When expanded  we get the phrase Nirgatah lobhah yasyah sa  or Devi is completely free from greed.

As we have seen in the previous namah, Lobha is one of the six Arishadvargas. Unlike anger which is a temporary phenomenon, greed is not. Also anger can be controlled, subdued but not greed. To the contrary, it keeps growing. Therefore the need to completely get rid of it.

The famous Sanskrit Sloka

Greed arises because of non-satisfaction. When the human mind is not satisfied with what it has in its possession, it longs for more and more and still more and this sows the seeds of greed in the mind and keeps  growing.

लोभमूलानि पापानि संकटानि तथैव च।

लोभात्प्रवर्तते वैरं अतिलोभात्विनश्यति॥

Greed is the root cause of all sins and troubles. Greed gives rise to enmity and excess greed leads to disaster.

Author' s Notes:

This is yet another Namah of LSN which is addressed to the devotees and not to Devi directly. Devi being Adi Parasahakti cannot come within the definition of human qualities such as greed etc.

One of the essential elements for renunciation to become a Sanyasi id giving up Lobha or greed. We find about this in Dikshita Niyamas and the following quote  will explain it

Lobhah Kamo rasasvadah sneho Manascha panchama |

Antahsatravah ete hi durjayā vidusamapi ||

To eradicate the internal spiritual enemies like lust, avarice, attachment, craving for the taste of food and ego, a renunciate has to follow the order to become an ascetic monk (sadhu).
