LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM

@ S. Subramaniam

[ 47 Nishchinta Nirahankara Nirmoha

Mohanashinee ]

निर्मोहा (162)

Nirmoha (162)

Devi is without any illusion.

Interpretation:

The word Moha means erroneous perception ( i.e. Vaichintyam) It is nothing but a confusion of thoughts. She is free from it.

Nirgatah Mohah Yasyah Sa  says the Sanskrit saying.  Devi is without bewilderment. Bewilderment again refers to a state of confusion, lack of clarity. To attain Brahman or for that matter to fully concentrate on any form of worship, chanting of Mantras or performing Japa, the mind has to remain very clear and without any illusion or confusion. This state is called Nirmoha.

Nirmoha in other Sanskrit Texts

Quote 1 of 3: from Isa Upanishad

Let's start with a quote from Isa Upanishad. Verse # 7 not only explains the term Moha but also indicates the state where it will not exist at all.

Yasmin vijanataḥ Atma eva sarvaṇi bhutani abhut| Tatra Ekatvam Anupasyataḥ Kaḥ mohaḥ Kaḥ Shokaḥ ||

The one who has the perfect knowledge, the one who sees oneness everywhere for him there is absolute clarity in mind he does not get dis-illusioned or does not grieve.

Quote 2 of 3: from Skanda Purana

Based on what is stated in the Skanda Purana, the term Nirmoha refers exclusively to Lord Shiva. It is very clearly  mentioned in the chapter devoted to Greatness of Vrata.

Quote 3 of 3 : From Devi Mahatmya, Agni Purana and Srimad Bhagvata Purana  etc.

In all the holy texts referred to above, we find Nirmoha to be the name of a sage (Rishi) who will be one of the Sapta Rishis (elite group of seven sages) during the 8th Manvantara called Savarni Manvantara.  We are now in the 7th (of the total 14) with the name Vaiwasvata Manvantara.

Author's Note

Extending  the views mentioned the Quote from Isa Upanishad, the writer wishes to underline the importance of developing our minds to reach the state of Nirmoha. Clarity can be acquired only by pure knowledge and this can be achieved by perseverance alone. It's Devi who will award us this stage. The path is known, the destination clearly defined, let's (we the devotees) keep moving towards it.
