LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM

@ S. Subramaniam

[ 46  Nishkarana Nishkalanka

Nirupadhir Nirishvara ]

निरुपाधिः (154)

Nirupadhih (154)

Meaning

Devi is without limitations. Brahman is beyond limitation.

Interpretation

The word Upadhi is explained as follows:

Upa = near, adhi = adadhati = gives own characteristics and Nir is negativity. From this, we gather that

Nirupadi refers tothe imposition of a character on an object which really does not possess.

There are two upadhis: one is ‘whole’ (sakhanda) and the other is fragmentary (akhanda). The goddess is free from both the adjuncts

For example, when a hibiscus flower red on colour, is placed close to a crystal, the colourless crystal also appears red in colour. This is upadhi.

Ignorance is reflected in the speech and actions of an ignorant person. This is upadhi.

Quote from Shiva Puranam

The following verse is found in  Chapter 30 of the Shiva Puranam named “Celebration of Parvati’s return”. This passage eulogizes Lord Shiva as the supreme deity specifically referring to him as Nitupadha.

Tatas Tejas Svarupancha Nirakaraṃ Niraṃjanam |  Nirupadhiṃ Nirihancha Maha Adbhutama Rupakam || 49 ||

Sage Narada addressed Himvat, the king of Himalayas said : Then she saw him in the form of a mass of splendour of no specific shape. It was unsullied, free from peculiar attributes and desires. It was wonderfully formless.

Author's Notes:

The very idea of Vaag Devi-s referring to Devi Lalithambika as Nirupadha is to indicate to the devotees, to bring it before their eyes, the vastness, the limitlessness of Devi's attributes.

Devotees of Devi may be classified into two categories - the boon seekers and the salvation seekers. Irrespective of the category, Devi grants to her devotees what they ask from her. She is the Jaganmata. Her poweress is so enormous that she keeps giving boons all the time - there are no limits to her - She is Nirupadha.
