LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM - Namah # 144

LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM

@ S. Subramaniam

[ 45 Nityamukta Nirvikara Nishprapancha Nirashraya ]

नित्य-मुक्ता (144)

Nitya-Mukta (144)

Meaning:

Devi is eternally free, another quality of the Brahman.  To realize the Brahman, one has to be free from bondage.

Interpretation:

Nityam Yatha tatha Mukta goes the Sanskrit saying. The term literally means the one who is liberated for ever from the worldly clutches.

From the above interpretation, it will be very that the namah does not connote directly to Devi but to her devotees. Devi needs no liberation from bondages rather it is she who grants liberation to her devotees. Therefore Vaag Devi-s reference to Devi as Nitya Mukta should be understood as the one who grants liberation (mukti) permanently (Nitya) to her devotees.

Adi Shankara on Nitya Mukti

A reference to Nitya Mukti is found in the book Atma-bodha (आत्मबोधः ) by Adi Shankara. The text describes the path to Self-knowledge or the awareness of Atma and was written by Shankara for his disciple, Sanandana, also known as Padmapada.

The verse:

निर्गुणो निष्क्रियो नित्यो निर्विकल्पो निरञ्जनः।

निर्विकारो निराकारो नित्यमुक्तोऽस्मि निर्मलः।।

Nirguṇo Niṣkriyo Nityo Nirvikalpo Niranjanaḥ Nirvikaro Nirakāro Nityamukto smi Nirmala

I am without attributes and actions; Eternal (Nitya) without any desire and thought (Nirvikalpa), without any dirt (Niranjana), without any change (Nirvikara), without form (Nirakara), ever-liberated (Nitya Mukta) ever-pure (Nirmala).

Quote from Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita:

In Chaitanya Charita Amrita, Madhya Leela, Chapter 22, Verse 11, we find a mention about Nitya Mukta.

Nitya Mukta nitya Krishna charanena unmukha which means those who are eternally liberated are awake to Krishna consciousness.

Author's Notes:

Liberation (Mukti) can be defined as freedom from material consciousness.

The scriptures mention five kinds of Mukti. They are:

Sarshti Mukti : Attaining opulence similar to God

Saameepya Mukti:  Staying close to God.

Saroopya Mukti  : Attaining body similar to God

Salokya Mukti: Living in the same world as God

Saayujya Mukti: The state of absolute unity (merger) with God

Whatever be the kind of Mukti it is Devi who decides when to grant it to her devotee. This is the inner meaning of the Namah : Nitya Mukta
