LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM - Namah # 125

LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM

@ S. Subramaniam

शर्मदायिनी (125)

Sharmadayini (125)

Meaning:

Devi is described in this namah as the giver of happiness.

Interpretation:

Here Sharman means happiness and Dayini means the provider or giver. Devi being the eternal mother of one and all, always showers happiness on her children, even without their asking for it.

According to the noted Telugu scholar and an authority on LSN, Brahmasi Udaya Bhaskara Bulusu,

here Devi is to be looked upon as the female counterpart of every man. So, when we say she gives pleasures, it means she sets men into the path of family life and leads the man to moksha. She plays a twin role, as a female she enjoys pleasure and as a female counterpart, she gives happiness to men.

Adi Shankara & Soundarya Lahari.

Adi Shankara has mentioned in several places in Soundarya Lahari about Devi showering happiness on the devotees. Another name of Soundarya Lahari is  Ananda  Lahari which itself stands for happiness.

Further in verse # 4 Shankara makes a specific mention about Devi granting both Bhoga (pleasures of life) and Moksha (liberation) to the devotees, even without asking for it. That's the greatness of Devi, the embodiment of Motherhood explains the holy sage.

Author's Notes

Another important hymn wherever find Devi being addressed is the Shyamala Sahasranamam. Verse # 60 is quoted below;

Mahila Manimasara Sarvani Sarmadayini Rudrani Ruchira Roudri Rulma Bhushana Bhushita.

Goddess Shyamala is the presiding deity of music, dance and drama. The word Shyamala  literally means the sweet dark one. She is also known by various names such as Matangi, Mantrini etc. The Brahmanda Purana makes a specific reference about Mantrini being one of the two chief aides of Lalitha Parameshwari in the battle against Bhandasura.
