LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM - Namah # 116

LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM

@ S. Subramaniam

भद्रमूर्तिः (116)

Bhadramurtiḥi (116)

Meaning:

Devi is described as the embodiment of auspiciousness .

Interpretation:

Bhadram, as we have already seen, means auspicious and Murthy means idol or representation. Therefore, the meaning of the namah is Devi is very auspicious.

Another reason for attributing the quality of  auspiciousness to Devi is that she is also addressed as Shiva which means auspiciousness.

Devi Mahatmyam contains an entire chapter where Devi is addressed as Narayani. According to this view, Devi (being the sister of Lord Vishnu) represents all the female qualities of Lord Vishnu / Sriman Narayana. Hence she is described as auspicious for , one of the thousand names of Vishnu refer to him as the best amongst auspicious - Mangalanam cha Mangalam.

Quote by Adi Shankara

Here again we have to sum up Devi being referred to as being auspicious in an indirect way. In the Soundarya Lahari Adi Shankara describes Devi's eyes as being auspicious and because of this the entire body of Devi is auspicious. Shankara uses the word Kalyani to describe Devi's eyes as being auspicious.

विशाला कल्याणी स्फुटरुचिरयोध्या कुवलयैः

Vshala Kalyaṇi Sphuṭa Ruchi Ayodhya  Kuvalayaiḥ
