LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM Namah # 115

LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM

@ S. Subramaniam

भद्रप्रिया (115)

Bhadrapriya (115)

Meaning:

Devi is deeply interested in showering auspicious things up on her devotees.

Interpretation:

Here Bhadram means auspicious and Priya means fond of (doing something). Thus the meaning of the namah is Devi is fond of doing auspicious things for her devotees.

The word Bhadram has its origin in the Vedas  - both Rig and Yajur Veda  make a mention of it.

भद्रं कर्णेभिः शृणुयाम देवाः

Bhadraṃ Karṇebhi Sṛṇuyama Devaḥ

says the Vedas which when translated means O gods, may we hear auspicious words with our ears,

Devi likes the act of benefaction.  She is keen to shower Her blessings on Her devotees. It has been hinted by scholars that the act of benefaction is done by her from her sacred feet

Quote by Adi Shankara

प्रातर्नमामि ललिताचरणारविन्दं

भक्तेष्टदाननिरतं भवसिन्धुपोतम् ।

Pratarnamami Lalitha charana ravindam

Bhakthaesthadana niratham bhava sindhupotham

Sri Lalitha Pancharatnam is one of the compositions of Adi Shankara, a five stanza hymn meant for chanting early in the morning.  The above quote is from verse # 3 of the hymn.

I bow to the feet of Goddess Lalitha early in the morning which always fulfills the desires of her devotees and uplifts them from the ocean of life and death acting like a boat - says Adi Shankara.

While LSN mentions Devi is desirous of showering benefits to her devotees, Shankara highlights about Devi granting salvation to her devotees by acting as a boat to release them from the ocean of birth, death and rebirth.

Author's Notes:

Devi grants auspicious things to her devotees in her three different forms as Lakshmi, Saraswati and Durga.

As Lakshmi, Devi has the power to grant to her devotees wealth that can  change their fate from any treacherous circumstances.

As goddess Saraswati, Devi not only bestows upon her devotees  bountiful knowledge but also guides them to acquire wisdom. Knowledge and Wisdom are two different things.

In her third power as Durga, Devi represents total happiness. She cures all the miseries of her devotees, (Durge - Durgati Nashini to quote from Devi Mahatmyam) pardons them of all their sins, showers  love, affection and unlimited happiness on them and protects them like a mother. Hence she is always addressed as Jaganmata.
