LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM
@ S. Subramaniam
तडिल्लता समरुचिः (107)
Tadillata Samaruchi (107)
Meaning:
Devi whose brilliance is equivalent to the brilliance of the creeper–like lightning
Interpretation:
Here the word Tadit stands for Saudamini which means lightning in Sanskrit. Lata means creeper. Samaruchi refers to - being equivalent.
The streak of lightning we are talking about in this namah is the arousal of the kundalini Shakti which brings about the radiance to the body and she is the reason for such a glow.
The thinner the streak, the better the absolute quality implied. That is the reason why the lightning-streak body of the Goddess is compared to Lata which means the creeper, the thin one.
Quote from Soundarya Lahari:
तटिल्लेखा तन्वीं तपन शशि वै॒श्वानर मयीं
निष्ण्णां षण्णामप्युपरि कमलानां तव कलाम् ।
Tatil Lekha Tanvim tapana Shashi Vaisvanara mayim
Nishannam Shannam apyupari Kamalanam tava kalam
Adi Shankara while worshiping
Devi says she is in the form of a lightning-streak made of sun, moon and fire and placed beyond the six lotuses in a great lotus grove dispels darkness.
Further, he adds (not quoted above) that those great seers and sages, having their minds freed from dross and ignorance, experience the upsurging billow of ultimate delight.
Author's Notes:
Devi shines like lightning when she is with her consort Lord Shiva. There are several instances of comparing the Brahman to lightning.
Kena Upanishad explains the Brahman beautifully. It says “It is like a flash of lightning…Just as lightning comes in a flash and removes darkness; self realization dawns in a fraction of a second and removes the darkness of ignorance”.
Narayana Suktam, verse 10 says ‘Vidhyullaekeva’ meaning flash of light. Therefore it is apparent that Lalitha Devi is referred to as the Brahman in this nama.
