LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM - Namah # 103

LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM

@ S. Subramaniam

आज्ञा चक्रान्तरालस्था  (103)

Ajna Chakrantaralastha

Meaning:

Devi ascends the Ajna Chakra which is located in the region between the two eyebrows  also known as the third eye. Ajna Chakra is the sixth of the seven Chakras.

Interpretation:

The word Ajna contains ‘a’ and ‘jna’

(अ + ज्ञान) which means center without knowledge (‘a’ is without, and ‘jna’ is knowledge).  Through constant practice of yoga and meditation, this ignorance can be overcome.

Ajna can also be interpreted as - to perceive or beyond wisdom. Because the chakra deals with the spiritual matters of intuition and seeing beyond the veil of illusion, it has been given the name Ajna.

The Ajna chakra is described as a transparent lotus flower in a circular disc form with two white petals on either side representing Shiva and Shakti. The central part depicts the moon with a downward pointing triangle inside it.

The deity Ardhanarishvara form Shiva-Shakti resides within the Chakra symbolizing the duality of subject and object.

Nilaya, Udita and Astha

Nilaya, Udita and Astha

In the description of three of the Six Chakras vis-a-vis Devi's position, we find Vaag Devi-s using three different words - Mooladaraika Nilaya, Manipurantha Udita and Ajnachakra Antara Astha

It should be understood as in Mooladara Chakra Devi stays (permanently), in Manipura Chakra she Manifests (raises like the morning sun) herself and in Ajna Chakra she ascends (climbs).

Adi Shankara about Ajna Chakra in Soundarya Lahari

तवाज्ञाचक्रस्थं तपनशशिकोटिद्युतिधरं

परं श्ंभुं वन्दे परिमिलितपार्श्वं परचिता।

Thava Agna chakrastham

Thapana Shashi koti dyuthidharam

Param Shambhum Vande

Parimili Taparsvam Parachita |

Adi Shankara says : I worship the Supreme God Lord Shiva, present alongside you in Ajna Chakra, endowed with the brilliance of countless suns and moons and pervaded by Supreme Consciousness on all sides.

Author's Notes

While the five Chakras below it represent the five elements of Nature, water, air, fire, the earth and the sky, Ajna Chakra represents the Mind.

The deity of Ajna Chakra is Lord Ardh Nariswara form of Lord Shiva, symbolizing male and female principles co-exists and cannot be separated. The composite form conveys the unity of opposites.

It should be remembered that ultimate Union of the Devi and the Lord takes place only in the Sahasrara Chakra. Ascending from Ajna Chakra to Sahasrara, Devi passes through yet another hurdle, the Rudra Granthi knot.
