LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM
@ S. Subramaniam
ब्रह्मग्रन्थि विभेदिनी (100)
Brahma Granthi Vibhedini (100)
Meaning:
Devi pierces through the three knots called Brahma Granthi that lie in the path between the first and second Kundalini chakras, the Muladhara andSwadhisthana.
Interpretation:
There are three Granthis (knots) which cause obstacles / hindrances on the path of movement of Shakti from the base Muladhara to the top Sahasrara. The three knots are called Brahma Granthi, Vishnu Granthi and Rudra Granthi.
The first of such knots, lies between Muladhara and Swadhisthana Chakras and is called Brahma Granthi. The word Vibhedini literally means "that which breaks through" and in reference to this namah, means Devi successfully unfastens the knot to ensure smooth passage.
The Brahma Granthi is so named because it is the kind of hurdle caused due to attachment towards worldly pleasures. This has to be overcome to move to the higher level and this is possible only by breaking the shackles of the knot.
Adi Shankara does make a reference about the Seven Chakras in Soundarya Lahari but a specific mention about the three Granthis, Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra, is not to be found.
Author's Notes
Granthis are impediments that come in the way of Meditation. In the initial stages, when one tries his hands in Meditation there is lack of concentration. Mind is pulled heavily towards worldly thoughts.
One has to overcome these attachments, break the so called Brahma Granthis, if one intends to make deep inroads in the path in his spiritual sojourn.
The writer's personal take on the matter is that control of one's mind is not in our hands but at the mercy of Devi Lalithambika. It is She who decides what should happen and when it should happen. It is she who alone is capable of breaking the shackles of Brahma Granthi and not us. So, one has to wait for the right time, right opportunity, to be the recipient of Devi's divine grace.
