LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM # 205

LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM

सर्व-यन्त्रात्मिका सर्व-तन्त्ररूपा मनोन्मनी ।

माहेश्वरी महादेवी महालक्ष्मीर् मृडप्रिया ॥ ५३॥

Sarva Yantratmika Sarva Tantrarupa Manonmani Mahishvari Mahadevi Mahalakshmir Mrudapriya – 53

सर्व-यन्त्रात्मिका (205)

Sarva Yantratmika (205)

Meaning:

Devi is present in all the Yantra-s

Different Gods (or sometimes different planet-gods) have different identities and hence different kinds of yantra-s.The potency of a mantra is infused into a Yantra by means of certain rituals and worthy of worship. The Yantra then becomes extremely powerful and its power increases  with the increase in the counts of mantra chanted.

Interpretation:

Similar to the preceding one, this Namah also is also formed of three parts Sarva meaning everything in this universe, Yantra, explained here in below and Atmika referring to Devi being present in it. Thus the Namah can be best interpreted as: The bliss of Devi is present not only in the Yantra made in her name but also in all the different kinds of Yantra-s made in the names of various deities.

What is a Yantra?

A yantra is a sacred geometry symbol developed from ancient wisdom that represents divine energy or divine power.

The word “yantra” comes from the Sanskrit root “yam. ” The literal meaning is “to control, bind, curb, or influence.”

Quote from Rig Veda:

अयं गोषु शच्या पक्वमन्तः सोमो दाधार दशयन्त्रमुत्सम् ॥

Like the word Mantra in the previous Namah,  Yantra also appears (perhaps for the first ever time) in Rig Veda - in a verse dedicated to Indra while offering to him his favorite drink, the Soma.

Adi Shankara and Yantra

As per Hindu scriptures, once Adi Shankaracharya did penance on the Kailash. He performed various austerities and this pleased Shiva. Lord Shiva appeared before Sri Sankara and preached to him about the greatness of Sri Yantra.

Author's Notes:

There are more than fifty kinds of Yantra-s but the most important one is the Sri Chakra the one dedicated to Devi Lalithambika. Devi Bhagwatam mentions Archa bhave Tatha Yantram which means, Yantra is a symbolism of divine power and hence, it is worshiped as a deity.

Shankara is believed to have installed Yantras in various temples including the Sree Kamakshi Temple at Kanchipuram and Sree Kamakshi Durga temple at Vijayawada.

The original idol of Devi Saradambal at the Sringeri made of sandalwood  Shrine was installed by Adi Shankara. Sankara had carved out a Sri Chakra on a rock. This original idol is now housed in the temple of Sri Vidyashankara at Sringeri.

These are all possibly the reasons to believe that the Yantra dedicated to Devi is the uniting force of all the Yantras in the universe that fetches Devi the Namah : Sarva Yantratmika.
