LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM


सर्वशक्तिमयी सर्व-मङ्गला सद्गतिप्रदा। सर्वेश्वरी सर्वमयी सर्वमन्त्र-स्वरूपिणी ॥ ५२॥



52. Sarvashakti mayi Sarva Mangala Sadgati Prada Sarveshvari Sarvamayi Sarvamantra Svarupini

Sarvamayi (203) 


Meaning:

Devi is present everywhere.  She is all inclusive. 



Interpretation:

The Namah derives its origin from the word Sarvamayam which literally means " It's everything". It has two parts one (1) Consisting of All and (2) All containing. This applies to Devi. 

In her capacity as the Mother of the entire universe, Maa Sarvamayi is found Everywhere, at every place and in every living and non-living things.  She is the one who is empowering everything in existence. There is not a single stretch of space in the entire universe without the imminent presence of Maa Sarvamayi. It is by Her Divine play that the entire universe abides. In Her and from Her only everything in existence comes into being. 



Lord Shiva as Sarvam Shiva mayam Jagat:

This Namah, like the previous one, also refers applies to Lord Shiva and Devi in her capacity as the consort of the Lord gets it from him. The following quote from Shiva Puranam declares Nishkalam sakalam Chitte Sarvam Shiva mayam jagat:

अहो विचारतो नास्ति ह्यन्यत्तत्वार्थवादिनः । निष्कलं सकलं चित्ते सर्वं शिवमयं जगत्



Devi Saraswati as Sarvamayi:

In Skanda Puranam,  we come across this interesting scene, where Sage Narada requests Sanst Kumara the details about Devi Saraswati, whereupon, Sanat Kumara composes the Saraswati Sahasranam. Among the 1000 names of Devi Saraswati, Sarvamayi is one:



सरस्वती च सावित्री संध्या सर्वेप्सितप्रदा।

सर्वार्तिघ्नी सर्वमयी सर्वविद्याप्रदायिनी॥


Sarasvati cha Savitri Sandhya Sarvepsita pradaa, Sarvartaghni Sarvamayi Sarva Vidya pradaayani.

In Devi Mahatmyam, Devi retorts and declares:  



एकैवाहं जगत्यत्र द्वितीया का ममापरा। पश्यैता दुष्ट मय्येव विशन्त्यो मद्विभूतयः॥


Ekaiva aham Jagatyatra dvitiya ka Mama para // Pashyaite dushta mayyeva Vidhantyo Madvi bhutaya


I am all, I am the only one in this universe. What other is there besides me, O you vile one? See that these gods, goddesses and demi gods are all my creations, my own powers and finally entering into myself. 



It is generally believed that the  above assertion made by Devi was inspired by the powerful hymn Devi Sukta which occurs in the tenth Mandala of the Rig-Veda. (see picture below):

I am the sovereign Queen….

I am the first of those who merit worship…

They know it not, but yet they all dwell in me….

I blow like the breath of life creating all the worlds… … 

I give birth to infinite expanse overspreading the earth. 

I transcend heaven and all the worlds….

I, in my mighty grandeur, hold together all existence… . 



The highly charged hymn is, in fact, an ecstatic exclamation by the Rishika VagamVagambhrini daughter of the sage Ambhrina) who is credited with composing it and who identifies herself with Devi. This hymn is the most magnificent chant singing the almighty glory of the feminine principle, Devi the Supreme all-pervading Divinity found in Rig Veda.
