LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM # 192

LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM

निस्तुला नीलचिकुरा निरपाया निरत्यया ।

दुर्लभा दुर्गमा दुर्गा दुःखहन्त्री सुखप्रदा ॥ ५०॥

[ Nistula Neelachikura Nirapaya Niratyaya // Durlabha Durgama Durga Dukha-hantri Sukhaprada ||50||]

सुखप्रदा (192)

Sukhaprada (192)

Meaning:

Devi provides eternal happiness to her devotees.

Interpretation:

The Namah contains two words Sukha and Prada. Sukha refers to happiness while Prada in this context means, the provider, the one who gives.

In the previous Namah Dhukka Hantri we had seen Devi destroying all sorts of sorrows and in this Namah we are seeing Devi bestows all sorts of happiness on her devotees. This two Namahs should always be considered in unison.

Now let's see what kinds of happiness that Devi will be showering upon her devotees. These can be classified into three such as (1) Sangama Sukham or the happiness of meeting, (2) Grahamedhi Sukham or all those kinds of happiness based on attachment to family, society and friendship and (3) Manah Sukham or the happiness that that can be felt or realized solely by the mind.

Some scholars are of the view that all these brands of happiness mentioned above are purely transitory and the real happiness is Mukti or Salvation. They make a quote from the Devi Mahatmyam or Chandi Path:

सर्वभूता यदा देवी भुक्ति मुक्ति प्रदायिनी

Sarva bhuta yada Devi bhukti mukti pradayini

Quote from Lalitha Trishati

Apart from LSN, in Lalitha Trishati (300 names of Devi) too we find a mention about Devi providing happiness to her  devotees. It's Namah # 300 who says:

Om Hrimkara para Sukha dayinyay Namah:

Devi gives gives all pleasures to  those who chant the auspicious word Hrim

Author's Notes:

Devi confers happiness on her devotees.  When sorrow is removed what remains is happiness.  But, She confers eternal happiness by forbidding Her devotees from rebirth.  This is considered as one of the best boons She gives to Her devotees.

But She has Her own way of preferring such devotees.  Such devotees should have tasted the sweetness (knowing the self is called as sweetness) and the source of sweetness.

Her selection of devotees purely depends upon their Sadhana (practice of meditation).  For such Sadhakas alone, She confers happiness that arises out of having no future births.
