LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM # 187

LALITHA SAHASRANAMAM

निस्तुला नीलचिकुरा निरपाया निरत्यया ।

दुर्लभा दुर्गमा दुर्गा दुःखहन्त्री सुखप्रदा ॥ ५०॥

[ Nistula Neelachikura Nirapaya Niratyaya // Durlabha Durgama Durga Dukha-hantri Sukhaprada ||50||]

निरत्यया (187)

Niratyaya (187)

Meaning:

Devi protects her devotees to be free from danger; she makes them infallible, secure.

Interpretation:

When split,  the Namah becomes Nir + Atyaya in which the term Atyaya stands for danger and Nir represen negativity.

When expanded, the term Niratyaya becomes Nirgatah Atyayah Yasyah Sa. Here, it may be noted that according to few scholars including Udaya Bhaskar Bulusu, the term Atyaya stands for Obstruction.

In this context, itshould be understood as to mean Devi does not transgress Her limits. She functions as per the law of karmas. She sets an example to us by following the laid down laws.

Yet another way in which the Namah can be understood is Niratyaya (निरत्यय):—[Nira+Tyaya] in which case the term refers to Devi being Faultless.

However, from the quote तद्भवान् वृत्तसंपन्नः स्थितः पथि निरत्यये  Tadbhavan Vṛlritta Saṃpanna Sthita  Pathi Niratyaye it can be strongly established that Niratyaya means free from danger, safe, secure etc.

Author's Notes:

It is very important to learn the correct pronunciation of the various names of Devi and this can be rightly taught only by a Guru. Self reliance might lead to complications.

In all the definitions we have seen above it can be seen that the term Niratyaya refers to being infallible, out of danger, out of transgressions etc. However it should be clearly borne in mind that Devi is beyond all these human emotions.

Vaag Devis have deliberately / Intentionally put these terms in the LSN which apply only to the Devotees. These human feelings need to completely overcome to get closer to Devi and that is possible only by sincere Meditation.
